Product Description

Salicin is an organic substance with a chemical formula of C13H18O7. It is a colorless crystal or white powder. It is soluble in water, easily soluble in boiling water, hardly soluble in ethanol (1:90), insoluble in ether or chloroform, but soluble It has hygroscopic properties in alkaline solution, pyridine or glacial acetic acid. It is widely found in the bark and leaves of many Salix and Populus plants. For example, the bark of purple willow contains up to 30% salicin. Salicin is a prodrug that is gradually transported to the lower part of the intestine, where it is hydrolyzed to salicyl alcohol by intestinal bacteria, and converted to salicylic acid after absorption. Therefore, it produces an antipyretic effect without causing stomach damage. Mainly used as a substitute for quinine.

Product Specification

Salicin is a naturally occurring phenolic glycoside extracted from the bark of willow (Salix species). It serves as a key bioactive marker for quality assessment and formulation reliability.

The product is standardized to a minimum of 98.0% salicin content (HPLC-verified), ensuring consistent potency and batch-to-batch reproducibility. This high-purity specification meets the requirements of pharmaceutical-grade and premium cosmetic raw material standards. The material appears as a white to off-white fine crystalline powder, fully soluble in water, with a clean, neutral profile suitable for multiple formulation types.

Key quality parameters include loss on drying below 5.0%, residue on ignition below 0.5%, and heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury) below 10 ppm. The product is manufactured under GMP conditions, with full batch traceability and complete COA documentation including HPLC chromatograms.

Benefits

Salicin has an antipyretic effect and treats fever, colds and infections.
Salicin has an analgesic effect and relieves arthritis pain and low back pain.
Exfoliating keratin and improving skin quality, it can treat atopic dermatitis, type I and type IV skin irritation, and the use of salicylic acid can increase the irritation threshold of sensitive skin.

Salicin

Application

  • Cosmetic Applications

Salicin is valued in cosmetic formulations for its exfoliating and skin-clarifying properties, attributed to its mechanism of action as a natural precursor to salicylic acid. It is particularly effective in products targeting acne-prone skin, hyperpigmentation, and rough texture.

  • Acne & Blemish Control

In formulations designed for acne management, salicin helps promote gentle exfoliation and clear pores. Recommended inclusion levels typically range from 0.5% to 1.0% in leave-on products such as serums, toners, and spot treatments. For rinse-off products like cleansers and face washes, suggested usage is between 1.0% and 2.0%.

  • Exfoliating & Skin Renewal

For products focused on skin renewal and evening skin tone, salicin offers a gentle alternative to traditional exfoliating agents. It is often combined with niacinamide or alpha-hydroxy acids for enhanced synergistic effects. Typical usage is 0.5% to 1.5% in serums and moisturisers.

  • Skin Soothing & Anti-Irritation

At lower concentrations (0.1% to 0.5%), salicin can be incorporated into calming formulations for sensitive or reactive skin, supporting a balanced and comfortable skin feel.

Formulation Notes

For cosmetic applications, salicin should be incorporated at temperatures below 60°C to preserve its active structure. It is compatible with most cosmetic ingredients and works particularly well with botanical extracts and moisturising agents. For products requiring clear appearance (e.g. serums or toners), pre-dissolving the salicin in the water phase before addition is recommended to ensure complete dispersion. In both cosmetic and supplement applications, the product is stable over a pH range of 4.0 to 7.0. In dietary supplements, it is suitable for tableting, encapsulation, and powder blending processes. For beverages or liquid supplement formulations, pre-dissolving the salicin powder in a portion of warm water ensures uniform dispersion throughout the final product. All products should be stored in cool, dry conditions, protected from moisture and direct sunlight. Typical shelf life is 24 months from date of manufacture under recommended storage conditions. For both categories, the actual inclusion level may require adjustment depending on final product specifications and local regulatory requirements. All formulations should be verified in accordance with the relevant regulations applicable to the target market.
