Isoflavones are organic (carbon-containing) compounds that are close to flavonoids — a class of powerful antioxidants. The main food sources of isoflavones are vegetables, especially soybeans and soy-containing foods. As a type of phytoestrogens-plant substances with hormonal properties similar to those of estrogen-isoflavones are also powerful antioxidants and have been proven to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Scientists believe that they can also play a role in the prevention of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases and cognitive disorders.
Isoflavones can either promote the production of estrogen or slow it down, depending on the previous estrogenic activity. Studies have shown that menopausal women who consume more soy products and soy isoflavones experience fewer hot flashes and report an improved quality of life. They also have better bone health, which in turn can help prevent osteoporosis and bone fractures.
