- Lutein and other carotenoids are believed to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are a destructive by-product of normal metabolism. Free radicals in the body will snatch electrons from other molecules and damage cells and genes. This process is called oxidation.
- Studies conducted by the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture show that lutein fights free radicals like vitamin E, which is a powerful antioxidant.
- Lutein is concentrated in the retina and lens, which can protect eyesight by neutralizing free radicals and increasing pigment density.
- For destructive glare, lutein also has a masking effect. A small study published in the 1997 “Experimental Eye Research” magazine showed that lutein can significantly reduce the damage to the human body caused by blue light reaching sensitive parts of the eye. Two subjects who participated in the experiment continued for 5 months I took the equivalent of 30 mg of lutein every day.
