- Lutein and other carotenoids are believed to have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants can protect cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are a destructive by-product of normal metabolism. A small study published in the 1997 “Experimental Eye Research” magazine showed that lutein can significantly reduce the damage to the human body caused by blue light reaching sensitive parts of the eye. Two subjects who participated in the experiment continued for 5 months I took the equivalent of 30 mg of lutein every day.
